WVEC Channel 13 News, May 7th, 2008 NORFOLK – Mattresses by the hundreds end up at the landfill each day. They pile up because they’re not made of materials that break down. Cheryl Hahn’s company, Organic Comfort Zone, produces and sells organic mattresses and bedding. renewable and sustainable. Her Ocean View business is one of only a handful of facilities in the US that even try to recycle conventional mattresses. All the materials in these “green” bedding and pillows come from Kapok to organic cotton and wool. They’re completely renewable and sustainable. Hahn says you’ll like sleeping on these organic mattresses. “It’s very breathable. All natural materials breathe. We lose a pint of moisture every night when we sleep. Where does that go — into your spongy mattress. All of this breathes. It keeps your bed very dry and healthy, resistant to dust mites, mold and mildew. There’s no chemicals, no hazardous PBDEs and you’re not taking that in your lungs or your pores at night so it’s a very healthy sleep system as well,” she notes. It’s hoped that over the next 30 to 40 years when these mattresses lifespan is complete, there will be processes to recycle the material if they’re separated. The wool, the organic cotton, and the rubber from the rubber trees can be broken down so the mattress won’t take up landfill space. Does ‘going green’ mean following the bandwagon? No; it simply means being more environment-conscious. Green Project: Solar Solutions

Solar power is a renewable energy source, which helps in saving money, in addition to protecting the environment from harmful gas emissions. Solar electric systems allow one to generate one’s own electricity, helping to protect against the ever increasing electricity prices. In addition to this, the price of solar power is comparatively less than that of the conventional energy sources.

 

Buyers of solar solutions are given a thirty percent Federal investment tax credit on residential and commercial systems to offset their initial investment. Combined with this, several states offer rebates, tax credits and performance-based incentives to make one’s purchase even more affordable. State and utility-sponsored incentives, such as ‘buy-down’ programs, are available in several areas. For instance, the California Energy Commission offers up to 30% off on the purchase price, while New Jersey offers up to 60% off on a residential system. The California Solar Initiative offers performance-based state incentive that offer funding for each KW-hr generated over the 5-year lifetime of a system.

Wind power is playing an increasingly crucial role in meeting electricity demand worldwide. With no risk of harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases, wind energy is a much more viable alternative to fossil fuel-powered electric generation.

 

Wind energy offers economic benefits at the individual and community level. Individuals are given the opportunity to save money on energy bills and also make money by producing power. There is a two-pronged reward for owning or leasing wind turbines:

one does not pay for the electricity, since it is produced at home

one obtains revenue for the energy produced as well as tax savings, and federal and state incentives

 

The production tax credit (PTC) introduced under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 offers income tax credit (2.1¢ per KW/hr) for electricity generation via utility-scale wind turbines. Wind project developers may also opt for 30% investment tax credit, instead of PTC.

I would say yes because you are using an alternative energy (hydrogen) rather then fuel (propane, gas, oil, etc.)
